Corporate Citizenship
Travelocity is the kind of place where employees work hard and learn much, but maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life. We understand that strong communities make for great places to work, entertain, raise families... and travel.
Travelocity?s parent company, Sabre Holdings, invests primarily in education, with an emphasis on math, science and technology. Our employees also take time out to volunteer - on and off company time - as our business allows.
Math Can Take You Places
Math Can Take You Places is our signature program, sponsored by Travelocity. It provides students in grades four through six with experiences necessary to develop the problem-solving and higher-level-thinking skills required to successfully complete algebra in high school. The technology-based curriculum includes videos, lesson plans and educational games designed to prepare students for success in math by focusing on critical pre-algebra concepts. Math Can Take You Places was designed by the Educational Resource Center at KERA, a public broadcasting producer and community-based radio and television institution in Texas, with input from 10 Dallas-Forth Worth Master Teachers from four school districts (Dallas, Fort Worth, Mansfield and Northwest). The program kicked off in 2004 in 10 DFW schools and is currently being used in nine states across the country, impacting 1.5 million students.
The Math Can Take You Places curriculum uses travel as a backdrop and five professionals in travel-related positions to show how algebraic thinking is used during everyday situations in the workplace. Studies have found that math concepts presented in real-world situations are critical to students' understanding and long-term retention. In February 2005, an independent evaluation of the program conducted by The University of Texas at Dallas showed that Math Can Take You Places "made a statistically significant difference on the achievement of the students who participated."
One of the most cited reasons for failure in algebra is lack of preparation at the elementary grade levels. There is also a strong correlation between students who fail algebra and those who drop out of high school. The travel business breaks down barriers around the world, bringing together people of difference. Recognizing this, Travelocity created the $5,000 award, administered by The Geographic Education National Implementation Project (GENIP), for the person or persons who have made the broadest impact on Geography Education in the United States. Nomination forms and application guidelines are available on the GENIP website (http://genip.tamu.edu)."Green" Worldwide Headquarters Facility
